Exploring the Serenity of Bali: A Journey into Wellness and Spirituality
“I just returned from an incredible journey to Bali, where I immersed myself in the island’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and a deep connection to wellness and spirituality. I was fortunate to be in Bali during the sacred weeks of Galungan and Kuningan, two of the most celebrated religious festivals that symbolize the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil). The air was filled with joy as locals celebrated, prayed, and participated in their daily rituals—an experience that genuinely highlighted the kindness and warmth of the Balinese people.
Nirjhara: A Tranquil Jungle Retreat
My adventure began at Nirjhara, a breathtaking jungle resort in Tabanan.
True to its name, which means “waterfall,” the soothing sound of cascading water is a constant presence, creating a peaceful atmosphere. This property emphasizes wellness and a deep connection to nature. It features organic food sourced from local farms and a staff of community members, showcasing their commitment to empowering the local community.
Nirjhara boasts beautifully designed lodges that harmonize with their surroundings, offering panoramic views of lush greenery. The infinity pool overlooking the waterfall was a personal favorite spot of mine, inviting relaxation and tranquility. During my stay, I indulged in their world-class spa. My Balinese massage was truly transformational. The spa uses local ingredients and techniques, ensuring an authentic experience.
Nirjhara’s restaurant serves a delightful variety of dishes, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients that highlight the flavors of Bali. The combination of extraordinary food, the kindest people, and the constant sound of the waterfall made it hard to say goodbye.
While at Nirjhara, I visited the magnificent Tanah Lot Temple, one of Bali’s most iconic landmarks. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Indian Ocean, this temple is a spiritual site and a breathtaking backdrop for photography. As I approached the temple during my early morning cycling trip, I was fascinated by the sight of the temple rising from the sea, surrounded by crashing waves.
Tanah Lot is particularly famous for its stunning sunsets, but visiting at sunrise allowed me to enjoy the peacefulness of the site before the crowds arrived. The temple is dedicated to the sea gods and plays a vital role in Balinese culture, with priests performing ceremonies to appease the ocean’s spirits. The serene atmosphere, the sound of the waves, and the fresh ocean breeze created an unforgettable experience.
Gdas: A Gem in Ubud
Next on my journey was Gdas, owned by Russell Simmons, a notable figure in the hip-hop world. This impressive lodge features beautifully designed rooms with views of lush rice fields, offering a perfect retreat just ten minutes from the heart of Ubud. Upon arrival, I was welcomed with a refreshing bath infused with healing leaves and lemons, an ideal remedy for the September heat and humidity.
Gdas emphasizes holistic wellness and is currently expanding to build the largest wellness center in Ubud. The center promises an array of treatments, such as yoga classes, meditation sessions, and personalized wellness programs. It will also include ice-cold plunge pools, IV therapy, and innovative treatments that cater to a variety of needs.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Russell, who encouraged me to try cryotherapy—what an experience! This quick, three-minute cold therapy leaves your body feeling toned, fully revitalized, and ready to take on the day.
The trick to genuinely experiencing Ubud and its stunning waterfalls, including Nungnung and Kanto Lampo, in all their glory, is to arrive first thing at sunrise. Being there at that time allows you to enjoy the sacred places all to yourself, feeling the magic of the moment.
I also participated in a water ceremony at Pura Tirta Tawar, one of Bali’s five holiest temples. This temple is renowned for its sacred spring water, which is believed to possess healing properties. During the ceremony, I joined the locals in a purification ritual, where we prayed and bathed in the blessed water, feeling a profound sense of renewal and connection to the divine.
Galungan Celebration
Experiencing Bali during the Galungan celebration was a highlight of my trip. This festival occurs every 210 days and lasts ten days, celebrating the victory of good over evil. During Galungan, families come together to honor their ancestors, and the streets are adorned with penjors—tall bamboo poles decorated with offerings.
I was captivated by the vibrant atmosphere throughout the island. Locals dressed in traditional attire, carrying offerings to temples, filled the air with the sweet scent of incense. The spirit of the community shone brightly, with festivities including traditional dance performances, feasts, and prayers at family temples.
Witnessing the devotion of the Balinese people during this time was incredibly inspiring. The celebrations culminate in Kuningan when the spirits of ancestors are sent back to the heavens, marking a beautiful conclusion to this sacred period.
Nusa Dua and the Synergy Travel Show
In Nusa Dua, I attended the Synergy Travel Show, a premier event showcasing the latest in transformational and wellness travel across Asia. Events like these are invaluable, as they allow us to connect directly with retreat leaders, wellness experts, and other pioneers in the field. By experiencing these properties and wellness practices firsthand, we’re able to truly understand what they offer, ensuring we can craft and advise on journeys that resonate deeply with our travelers.
Beyond discovering new and innovative offerings, these events also allow us to strengthen our relationships with our partners on the ground. These connections ensure that every experience is as authentic and seamless as possible, providing our travelers with a truly transformative journey—something I am excited to bring back home.
Nihi: A Transformational Experience in Sumba Island
My final stop was at Nihi on Sumba Island, an experience out of this world. Renowned as one of the best luxury resorts in the world, Nihi offers an unparalleled experience that combines adventure, wellness, and sustainability. I embarked on a Spa Safari, visiting a local village, riding along the beach, and even swimming with horses—a transformational adventure in every sense.
Each morning, I practiced yoga overlooking the ocean, feeling the gentle breeze and listening to the waves. I basked in the luxury of my stunning two-bedroom villa with a private plunge pool, offering the perfect retreat after a day of exploration. I also enjoyed refreshing swims in the ocean. I was lucky to witness baby turtles hatching and taking their first swim—a magical moment I will cherish forever.
Nihi’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement is genuinely remarkable. It provides guests with unique experiences that support local culture and conservation efforts. Combining breathtaking natural beauty, luxurious accommodations, and meaningful experiences made this the perfect ending to my Bali adventure.
